Honeymoon in Greece - Five Tourist Attractions in Greece for Newlyweds

83

By Sufidreamer

To answer this question, it is easier to narrow down the field a little. You could spend a lifetime exploring Greece, and still never see everything. The major places, such as Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, have so much information online that it is nearly impossible to add anything new. These places are very crowded and also very expensive, always an important consideration in times of economic turbulence. Greece is not as cheap as it used to be but, by avoiding the tourist traps, it is still possible to enjoy an affordable honeymoon in Greece, and leave with a lifetime’s worth of memories.

The best place in Greece, although we are a little biased, is the Peloponnese, which is blessed with some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. The peninsula contains everything for a perfect honeymoon experience, blending sleepy fishing villages and white beaches with rich history, culture and hot sun. It is difficult to pare down the shortlist to only five places, but here are our personal favourite tourist attractions in Greece for newlyweds.

Honeymoon in Greece - The Mani

The Mani Peninsula is the central ‘digit’ hanging down from the Peloponnese, and possesses a rich mix of culture, history and beautiful scenery. Maniot villages are usually walled citadels, clinging precariously to precipitous mountain sides, packed with the famous tower houses. These were built in mediaeval times, when the Maniots enjoyed a fierce reputation as tough and independent people. Murderous feuds passed down from generation to generation, from father to son. The occupying Turkish army refused to enter the mountains of the Mani, such was the warlike reputation of the locals. Whilst still enjoying a certain infamy, the people are wonderfully hospitable, yet proud of their heritage and history.

The Mani is very popular with tourists, but has enough space to get away from the beaten track and enjoy a little privacy. In the spring and autumn, the Mani is packed with a kaleidoscope of wildflowers, clinging tenaciously to the barren rocks. The resulting honey is the best in the world, and the Greek yoghurt heaped with this honey is truly the ultimate dessert.

It is worth spending an evening on the beach, with a Greek Ouzo, waiting for one of the most beautiful sunsets in Europe, just as spectacular as the famous Santorini ‘flash.’ In terms of places to stay, Stoupa is the main tourist spot, but is often packed with package tourists. Staying elsewhere is advisable; you are guaranteed to find deserted beaches and open space, as well as avoid the extortionate tourist prices charged in many hotels and tavernas. Our favourite place is Kardamyli, a picturesque and laid-back fishing village, a world away from the crowds of sweating, drunken tourists.

Gythio - The Port of Ancient Sparta

Gythio is a lively fishing port, and was once the port of Ancient Sparta. As well as being a beautiful and vibrant place to visit, it is never too crowded, yet provides everything for the newlywed. In terms of romance, you have Marathonisi islet, where Paris and Beautiful Helen of Pellanas consummated their relationship, before fleeing to Troy. Many of the tavernas overlook the islet, offering fresh sea-food and a wonderful copper sunset.

Just south of Gythio are the Diros caverns, one of the most beautiful cave systems in Europe, burrowing under the geology of the Taygetos Mountains. Most people think of caves as dark and dull, but these are filled with breath-taking formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The caves are flooded, so you will be ferried through the caves by Gondola, and in a more spectacular setting than Venice. If you mention to the guide that you are newlyweds, they will let you have a boat to yourselves.

That is not the end of the romanctic honeymoon treat, as nearby Diros Bay is a fantastic and unspoiled beach. The tranquil cove is warm, inviting and deeply azure, the striking sapphire blue that is only found in Greek waters. A swim, and a rest on the white sand, can be broken by a visit to the taverna, for Greek Ouzo, fresh seafood and conversation.

Honeymoon in Greece - Romantic Monemvasia

Monemvasia is a hidden gem of the Peloponnese, nestled in the south east and a haven for artists and writers. Monemvasia is a steep sided islet, climbing from the Aegean, and is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The top of the islet is covered with the ruins of a Byzantine castle, and some beautiful Orthodox churches, festooned with intricate icons. The town, lying below the citadel, is a narrow maze of rough cobbled streets, lined with a multitude of shops and tavernas. Most of the tavernas have verandas, where you can sit and soak up the evening sun, watching the fishing boats slowly chug back to port.

Romantic Honeymoon Greece - Ski and Trek in Trikala

Away from the Southern Peloponnese, in the northern mountains, is the village of Trikala. This beautiful place is nestled in the mountains, with a cool and clear climate during the summer months. In winter, there is enough snow for skiing and snowboarding. Most of the buildings look like they belong in alpine Austria, and the village is full of Swiss chalets, an unexpected sight in Greece. The name of the village, literally, means ‘Three Goods’. This refers to the pure water, the clear air and the beautiful scenery.

Whilst most of the tourist industry revolves around the winter season, it is possible to stay in one of the beautiful chalets at any time of year, and enjoy a unique and rewarding experience. Trekking in the countryside, enjoying the clear evening and unspoilt stars, is a joy, and will long remain fresh in the memory.

Nafplio - The Cultured Greek Honeymoon Destination

Situated a few kilometres south of Argos, overlooking the Argolic Gulf, Nafplio has a deserved reputation as one of Greece’s prettiest towns. It is the perfect destination for newlyweds wanting to experience the traditional Greek holiday, of warm sun, lazy Greek breakfasts, white beaches and blue seas. Nafplio is well provided with hotels, is full of the beautiful Venetian architecture common to the Peloponnese.

The town can get a little crowded, but it tends to be the preserve of cultured Athenians, rather than foreign package tourists. The colourful town is situated on a promontory, with wide boulevards allowing a couple to enjoy the gentle stroll and the evening air. Nafplio has a historical feel, with three castles and wonderful architecture. This blends seamlessly with the modern cafes and bistros, the gentle throb of the nightlife blending with the evening song of the sea. For the historically minded, the nearby ancient Epidavros Theatre has regular performances of plays, in Ancient Greek.

MORE INFORMATION

Anyway, we hope that this helps you in your quest for the perfect honeymoon experience. Other areas in Greece are just as beautiful, or as keenly priced, but the people of the area are uniquely hospitable and friendly. If they find out that you are newlyweds, don’t be surprised if an impromptu party swings into life.

For mixing history, nature and culture, with sun and lazy walks down sunset beaches, the Peloponnese has everything needed for a romantic stay. So much so, in fact, that we never left!

No problem, gamergirl. Thank you for the nice comment!

There is so much more to Greece than Athens and the Islands, and it was difficult to narrow it down to only five.

Greece really is an awesome place!  It is all about simplicity and stressing down - how can you not?  Can't wait to return and visit all the places I didn't get to after staying a few months.

We were in Santorini maybe too long - as I like to really get to know the people as well as the land I'm visiting - and the locals were telling my husband they were entertaining the thought of making me mayor.  Definitely time to leave when you are about to get drafted into politics! grin.  We all got a good laugh about it. We will always remember the wonderful people who befriended us, teaching us about their culture.

Mid-September is really the best time to visit Santorini as most of the tourist crowds have left but the weather is still awesome and plenty of people to make things interesting.  Your area of Greece is beautiful I've been told and now here you are reminding me to return - thank you!

Thanks Denny,

It sounds like you had a wonderful time in Santorini - I hope that you manage to return soon!

We hope to explore more of Greece next year - I have mobile internet so can still work whilst travelling. Let us know if you come across to the Peloponnese.

Sufi- The other day when I was writing my hub I didn't leave a comment about how I liked these pictures and it does seem like a wonderful place to visit. I love Southern Europe but only wonder if English is well spoken in all these parts and how expensive the trip would be per person for two weeks on a budget to cover major places in Italy and Greece.

Sufidreamer profile image

Sufidreamer Hub Author 3 years ago

Hi CountryWomen,

It is a long time since I visited Italy, so I cannot help you with that one.

As for Greece:

In Athens and the main tourist areas, everybody speaks perfect English, so no worries there. Even out in the countryside, you will always find somebody to translate.

As for costs, it really depends upon when you come. The middle of summer can be pricey. April/May and September are great times to come, because the weather is still perfect, and prices are low.

Athens and the main tourist resorts can be expensive to stay and eat - there are many lesser known places that are just as beautiful. In Gythio, for example, you can find a double room for about 20 - 30 Euros per night. To eat well is about another 20 Euros per day, even less if you know where to look ;) For Athens, we know some cheap places, but you could safely double those prices.

Transport is cheap - Gythio to Athens is about four hours, and is a beautiful journey. You are looking at about 20 Euros per person for a single ticket. Of course, you could also hire a car, for about 200 - 300 Euros for the week.

That is all that I can think of for now - feel free to PM if you have any further questions - we would be delighted to help!

Makes me feel like I want to get married all over again, just to honeymoon in Greece..... Now what to do with the Everton Fan ...

Sufidreamer profile image

Sufidreamer Hub Author 3 years ago

Easy - divorce him and then remarry! Make a deal with him - If Everton win the FA cup, demand that he takes you to Greece for a romantic break - he will say yes to anything at that point.

If they lose, suggest that he takes you to Greece to get over the pain of losing!

I got married on Santorini - second time around for both of us, so we didn't feel the need to do the big family-gathering thing. Yes, it's probably more expensive there than the lesser-known islands, but I can't recommend the Anastasis Apartments enough. There are plenty of Greek wedding planners online but it's scary as you don't know whether to trust them. I booked the Anastasis after seeing glowing reviews on Tripadviser. They arranged the whole thing, including flowers, cake and a fantastic photographer, and it all went without a hitch - we didn't have to do a thing!

Sufidreamer profile image

Sufidreamer Hub Author 2 years ago

Sounds fantastic - Santorini is a beautiful place. It is certainly amongst the top locations in the world for a wedding, especially if you find warm Greek hospitality like yourself! Tripadvisor is usually pretty good with the reviews.

Greeks love weddings, and most people will try everything within their power to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Glad that everything went well, and we wish you both Many Years!

Much too late for a honeymoon...almost 39 years...but one doesn't have to be honeymooning to have a fabulous vacation there. Going to send this hub to others I know who have been there and others who have not but may want to go. Hope to see these areas in person some day. In the meantime, thanks for your photos and descriptions. Enjoyed it immensely!

I loved reading this. Even though I'm far from going on a honeymoon. It kinda makes me wat to plan mine already :D

On another note, my mom and I have been talking about going on more holidays this year-to see the world. I've always wanted to visit Greece and while much of what you said is in a romantic sense. It works for anyone wanting to see the magic of Greece.

It will more than likely be a girl holiday my mom,sis and myself and we like a bit of romance so it's all good :D

Hi Sa Toya - thanks for dropping by, and I am glad that you enjoyed the hub.

Greece is certainly wonderful destination and has lots to offer for a girl holiday. Whilst it is nice to see the famous spots of Athens and Santorini, they are often expensive and overcrowded.

Let us know when you want to come and we will see if we can help you with any arrangements.

I Surfid,

I just loved this hub of Greece and the Greek Islands.I was booked to go on a cruise to the Greek Islands several years ago. Unfortunately, I got sick and was unable to go, and now that I have a terminal disease it doesn't look like I am ever going to get there. So,you see you just laid it all out there for me to see. I can really see from your pictures and what I have read, that it is a truly romantic destination and it showed exactly what I missed by getting sick. Thank you so much for doing this hub, it really tells a wonderful story of Greece and all her good points. It is truly magical BEAUTYBABE X

Sufidreamer, ur website is very informative, thanks a bunch. My hubby and I will be visiting Greece in June for our honeymoon, we plan to spend 4 days in Napflio and 4 days in Athens. What mode of transportation do you recommend for us to take from the airport in Athens to Napflio and back to Athens? :D

Sufidreamer profile image

Sufidreamer Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi Sooi - First things first, I hope that the wedding goes well - Nafplio is beautiful, so I hope that you have a great time.

You have two options:

You can take the bus. Catch the X93 from the airport to Kiffisou bus station - it takes about 30 minutes and is the last stop. From Kiffisou, you can catch the coach to Nafplio (about a three hour journey). Back to Athens is the same process although, depending upon where you are staying in Athens, a taxi from Kiffisou to your hotel may be easier.

There is also the train - you can go from the airport to Corinth, then go from Corinth to Nafplio. Going back to Athens, you can get off at Athens Larissa station and use the suburban rail/metro to go to your hotel.

There is the option of hiring a car, which is perfect for getting from the airport to Nafplio, but the only problem is driving in Athens. If your hotel is on the outskirts, that is fine: If it is in the centre of Athens, then I would not recommend it. The centre of Athens is not for the unwary!

Feel free to send a PM through my profile if you need anything.

This is a good site with the train times:
