Greek thyme honey, as well as being one of the finest tasting honeys in the world, is packed with a range of health benefits. The Ancient Greeks used honey as a medicine, especially for diseases of the gut and as an antiseptic for wounds (Zeina, Othman, Al-Assad; 1996).

Greek thyme honey is infused with layers of flavour from the abundant wildflowers carpeting the mountains in spring and summer. One of the most prominent and fragrant of these is wild thyme,Thymus serpyllum, which is a staple of the Greek diet. Thyme is known to have medicinal qualities, mainly due to the antibacterial agent, thymol, and some of this goodness transfers into the Greek thyme honey.

Along with Greek Ouzo, To Farmako, ‘The Medicine,’ and Greek Olive Oil, thyme honey is one of the staples of Traditional Greek Folk Medicine

Greek thyme honey is the queen amongst Greek foods.

The Health Benefits of Greek Thyme Honey

  • Greek thyme honey is perfect for relieving the worst effects of the sore throat associated with colds and flu (Yaniv & Rudich, 1996). Try a spoonful dissolved in a herbal tea, or a spoonful in a hot Tsipouro or brandy.
  • Greek thyme honey makes an excellent facemask, clearing blocked pores and rejuvenating damaged skin. If you have dry skin, try mixing one egg yolk, a teaspoon of olive oil, and a teaspoon of Greek thyme honey. Apply and leave for 15 minutes, washing off with warm water and then rejuvenating the pores with a splash of ice cold water.
  • You could try mixing a little ground oatmeal into some Greek thyme honey, applying to the skin and leaving for 15 – 30 minutes. Wash with warm water and your skin will feel tight and rejuvenated.

  • Honey has excellent anti-bacterial and antifungal properties, and it is still used, in Greece, as a poultice for wounds, to prevent infection. Honey is commonly used covering for burns and scalds, and is currently used by the British Armed Forces. (Zeina, Othman, Al-Assad; 1996)
  • Honey has been shown to be effective against salmonella, E. coli and Vibrio cholera, so a diet rich in honey is effective against food poisoning. Thyme honey is the most effective honey for inhibiting the growth of bacteria (Ceyhan & Agur, 2001)

  • Honey is effective against the rubella virus, another reason why it is commonly used in cough mixtures and decongestants. (Zeina, Othman, Al-Assad; 1996)
  • There is anecdotal evidence to suggest that honey has anti-cholesterol properties, and that a diet with a moderate amount of honey, containing antioxidants, is an excellent supplement to fruits, vegetables and nuts.
  • Anecdotal evidence suggests that Greek thyme honey may prevent breast and prostate cancer. As yet, this is far from certain, but experiments are ongoing (Apitherapy News, 2009).

Wild Thyme, Thymus Serpyllum, has long been a staple for herbalists and folk medicine.

Greek Thyme Honey – The Queen of Greek Foods

Greek honey is a part of the famous Mediterranean diet, regarded as one of the healthiest diets in the world. Greeks live for a long time, and I know four people in my area who are over 100 years of age, and many more well into their 90’s. Part of this is down to an active lifestyle, but much of it is dues to the healthy and wholesome Greek foods, packed with anti-oxidants and vitamins.

Greek thyme honey certainly deserves its place amongst the pantheon of healthy Greek foods, and is a staple of the Greek diet. Try it smothered over a serving of Greek yoghurt, as part of a healthy Greek breakfast, or used to make the delectable and addictive baklava.

Greek thyme honey is filled with complex, rich flavours, the sweet molasses and slight bitterness blending beautifully with the floral taste. This versatility sees Greek thyme honey used with feta cheeses and meat, as well as sweet dishes.

Greek thyme honey is available online, allowing you to enjoy this staple of the Mediterranean diet.

Greek Foods - Rakomelo

One wonderful drink, which I have on a cold morning, or when I have a cold, is Rakomelo. This drink is made from Greek thyme honey and the fiery grape-based spirit, tsipourou, known as ‘raki’ in parts of Greece

To about 250 ml of raki, add a couple of cloves, a cinnamon stick, and about 3 teaspoons of Greek thyme honey. Bring to the boil in a small saucepan and simmer for about a minute, then serve.

I sometimes add a little lemon juice or a couple of cardamom pods, too. If you cannot find raki, any bitter spirit is good – tequila and absinthe are good, and I have used whisky and rum in a pinch.

Sufi-I am married to a Greek-2nd generation-who adores all things from the 'old country,' however I have never heard of Greek honey. Or Raki-which sounds absolutely delicious!

Thank you for such a tempting hub!

Thanks for visiting, Hello, hello

Hi Lorlie - the raki is a wondrful drink, although a little robust. Your hubby might know it as tsipourou - it is distilled from the leftover mash after winemaking. If you can get hold of some Greek honey, it is divine!

Geia sou, De Greek - Absolutely no chance! It is the finest honey, with an honourable mention to New Zealand honey :)

Hi Granny's House - I never heard of that one. I will have a look into that and add it to the Hub, if needed. Thanks for that tit-bit of interesting information.

Cheers, Katrina - it is absolutely gorgeous. I love honey, and the health benefits take away a little of the guilt :D

I have tried honey and hot water with fresh lemon as a tonic which was very uplifting. I had no idea of the extra benefits of thyme. Thanks.

Thanks, Dr Cherie - if you can get hold of Raki, the rakimelo is a good natural decongestant. If you can't get hold of it, whisky or brandy are just as good :)

Enjoy!

Cheers, Billy - we often drink mountain tea here, which has wild thyme, chamomile and wild sage in it. Really good for cleaning the system :)

This is interesting. There's a New Zealand honey called Manuka honey which has excellent healing properties - I wonder if Greek thyme honey is the same.

My ex had stomach ulcers. The specialist told him he'd need to go on ulcer medication but to try one thing first: give up all caffeine (i.e.no coffee, tea, Coke or chocolate) for a month, and eat as much Manuka honey as he could manage - on toast, in drinks, or even by the spoonful.

He went back for a checkup after the month was up, and the ulcers had all healed. Honey is a wonderful thing!

Thanks, Marisa - when I did the research for this Hub, New Zealand honey cropped up a lot, so I could well believe it. New Zealand honey is fantastic stuff - I used to treat myself to some in the UK, although it was expensive.

I will remember that one, as my partner has problems with an ulcer occasionally, although lots of extra virgin olive oil helps, too.

Stay healthy!

Sufidreamer. Hi. What a great hub with such fantastic information, most of which I knew nothing about.

Greek Thyme Honey sounds like a wonderful and very healthy product and extra virgin olive oil is the only oil I use in my cooking.

Thank you so much , it has given me a lot of ideas on how to improve our health. :) :)

We only ever use extra virgin olive oil, but we have our own olive trees, which makes life easier :)

Bon appetit

Great stuff...I have been focused on the difference between raw and processed honey; Isn't it true that refined honey loses a lot of it's wonderful properties? I wondered if the Greek honies you mentioned are raw or not. thanks!!

Sufidreamer profile image

Sufidreamer Hub Author 20 months ago

Thanks, Joy.joy.joy - I only ever eat unrefined honey as it tastes much better and keeps all of the goodness. The products linked to are all raw, unrefined honey, and they are all very good.

Enjoy!

I love thyme honey. When I lived in England I was annoyed because I couldn't find any proper honey in the super markets. They all had the wrong color (too light) and were mostly from flowers (I don't like the taste of flower honey). I had to carry honey from home every time I visited Greece. Thyme honey is in my opinion the best there is -with pine honey being close behind.

I'm moving to Australia in 2 months and I'm already planning on how much honey and oregano I'm going to have to take with me to last me a year :P

Sufidreamer profile image

Sufidreamer Hub Author 17 months ago

Hi Sofia - It certainly is very difficult to find decent honey in the UK without paying a small fortune. I love the herbal honeys, although pine honey is lush :)

Best of luck in Australia - I am a big fan of some of the New Zealand honeys, so I hope they compensate :D
