How to Become a Writer – The Tools for Developing a Writing Career
81Many people, swayed by the explosion of writing online, have decided to join the boom and seek to become a professional writer. Many dig out half-finished manuscripts for the book they started, but never finished, whilst others seek to write for pay, as an extra income or full-time.
There are distinct differences between the various types of writing, but certain traits are essential for all budding freelance writers. Across the whole range of styles and types, freelance writers need a certain mentality when learning how to become a writer. They also need mental toughness, because freelance writing for a living is a tough vocation and is not for the faint hearted.
Many writers look to develop a writing career as a creative writer, whether through poetry or prose. Others look to write online or become technical or academic writers, and start scouring the freelance job boards, looking to become a writer by freelance writing with oDesk or Elance. These are a good way to learn the ropes, although you must be careful to avoid the clutches of the notorious article mills.
Writing as a Hobby and Developing a Writing Career Through Marketing
Of course, this article is aimed at people who wish to make a career out of writing in one form or another. There are many more who just love to write, and use Hubpages and other sites as a place to have a voice and share their views. I love them and believe that this keeps the rest of us pure, teaching us never to forget the art of writing for the sheer joy of it, rather than becoming fixated upon dollars and writing for pay. Writing for a hobby is a completely different thing and I hope to continue stumbling across passionate, powerful articles.
In addition, there is the world of marketing online and using article writing for Adsense and affiliate marketing. This article is not really aimed at this area, although there is an overlap; sales-writing experts, like Nelle Hoxie, or infohub masters, like Ryan Kett, also know how to use words and are talented writers. However, I am aiming at those who want to pursue freelance writing for a living as active income.
Developing a Writing Career – The Three Foundations of Writing
Whatever path you chose, there are three basic ways to self-improve and master the craft of the writer, because there is more to becoming a freelance writer than sitting down in front of a computer. What separates a writer from somebody throwing a few info-articles online is the ability to mould and shape language, using it as more than a mere tool for communication. A skilled writer can infuse even the most boring subject with life and generate emotion. This skill is self-explanatory for poets and fiction writers, but is even truer for academic and technical writers.
To a certain extent, some of this ability is inbuilt and some people are born writers, whereas others will find it tough to pick up the art. In the same way, some individuals have an innate and natural talent for music, painting, or sport. Even if you are blessed with natural talent, you still need to hone and practice your skills, in the same way that a top-golfer must spend hours every day practicing their swing until it becomes second nature. An artist must learn the basic techniques upon which they can build and add their own individualized twist. As an example, artists like Picasso, who consistently pushed the boundaries of art and broke rules, had to possess a thorough knowledge of the rules and basic techniques to start with. There are no shortcuts with the process of becoming a professional writer, as with any creative endeavor.
Developing a Writing Career – Write, Write, Write
The first stage in developing a writing career is to write, at least a couple of hours every day. This seems very strange, but it is the foundation of becoming a freelance writer, and you should start writing about anything and everything. The brain needs constant exercise to become adept at writing, and constant practice will make writing into an instinctive talent, rather than one that you have to think about consciously.
Professional writers draw upon their sub-conscious as a way to create, and constant practice is the only way to develop this ability. Sometimes, I look back at my previous work and cannot even remember writing it; it is almost as if someone else wrote it. That is when you know that you have the ability to go into ‘The Zone.’
If you decided to go to the gym and work out, you would start with light exercises and slowly build up the intensity over time, developing a routine that suits you and brings results. The same applies for writing; the more you practice, the better you will become, especially if you constantly look back over your earlier work and apply a dose of healthy self-criticism.
Reading is the Foundation of Developing a Writing Career
Reading is crucial. Most budding writers already spend a lot of time reading, but developing a writing career involves taking this to the next level. If you are serious about becoming a writer, find books by your favorite authors and pick apart their style, making a mental list of what you like about them. You can carry this into their own work, and use it as the basis for your own distinctive style.
In the same way that musicians have influences, and learn from others, you can cherry-pick techniques from other writers and blend them together. If you add a healthy dose of your own individuality, then you are well on the way to becoming a writer. We all have our favorite genres of writing, but try to diversify and look at a broad array of styles and genres.
For example, you may decide that you want to be a technical writer and read some books and articles written by experts in the field. However, technical writers have to be able to use very few words very creatively, applying readability and emotion, despite strict word-limits. Reading creative authors like Hemingway, with his brutal, stripped down style, can be a great help to technical and academic writers. Likewise, creative writers can pick apart the style of travel writers and non-fiction authors, looking at how their powerful use of adjectives draws the reader in to the text.
This is one of the secrets to writing and, again, music is a good parallel; many rock guitarists grew up listening to jazz and blues, and many electronic acts listen to Mozart. Whilst we use the terms technical, academic, and creative to subdivide writing, in reality the boundaries are porous, and good writers consistently draw from various areas, blending the styles together.
For example, I worked with an academic writer who wrote a lot of good poetry in his spare time, and a lot of the rhythms and cadences crossed over into his academic writing, making his prose compelling and imbued with a hidden passion. Likewise, a creative writer who has the bad habit of using too many words and irrelevant adjectives can learn a lot from the tight discipline and word economy of a good technical or academic writer.
How to Become a Writer and the Power of Criticism
The only way that you are going to improve as a writer is by accepting criticism and acting upon it. The first weapon at your disposal is self-criticism, and you must learn to constantly seek to improve as you develop your writing career. As you build up a portfolio of writing, spend time going through your old work and looking at how you can improve it. For example, I look at many of the earlier articles that I wrote for the Experiment Resources site, and cringe; the overuse of commas and long sentences are just two of the problems. I will be going through those in the summer and refreshing them!
The other angle for criticism is from others; family and friends will always put a positive spin on things, seeking not to bruise your ego. This really does not help and encourages many people towards having a dream of becoming a writer when they really do not have the talent. Whilst I am not a fan of reality talent shows, there is a parallel with writing; some of the people on those shows are there because nobody stopped to tell them that they are, quite honestly, atrocious, and they suffer the indignity of looking foolish on international TV.
It is exactly the same with becoming a writer, and it is better to know early on that you are never going to get there than waste time. It is harsh, but receiving the death-blow to your writing ambitions early on, before you have written 40 000 words of trite crap, saves a lot of time and helps you to focus your efforts elsewhere, such as learning to paint or sculpt.
If you find a client, editor, or publisher who gives you harsh criticism, you can use this to improve so, rather than take it to heart, act upon it and your writing will change for the better. Many pro-writers and authors went through periods of rejection, but used that to spur them onwards and become better. My old schoolfriend, Joe Abercrombie, is one such example; he realized, after a few years, that his manuscript was crap, and tore it up. He rewrote it and is now a very successful fantasy author. You cannot afford to have a delicate ego if you wish to become a writer.
Building a Writing Career – Dedication, Talent and Practice
So, I hope that this article has given you a little insight into the world of becoming a writer, and helped you to decide if it is the way ahead for you. Writing really is no different from becoming a professional in any field, and you have to seek to improve and learn new skills. In addition to learning how to write, you have to learn other skills, such as marketing and developing a business website design, but this will come with time.
Sports professionals, artists, musicians, architects, and plumbers spend a long time mastering their trade. Becoming a writer is no different; you cannot suddenly wake up one morning and decide that you are a professional writer. You have to have the dedication, and spend a long time practicing and mastering your craft as part of developing a writing career.

Pretty damn thorough...
Practice, practice, practice resonates in all you said; which is the biggest hurdle if your not cutout to do it. Its like buying into anything, don't if you are not willing to keep it...
Good info, appreciate the reminder... Not to, get all wrapped up in a piece and not picture how it will be perceived...
This is a wonderful help and pointing into the right direction. Thank you for sharing.
ha ha ha..a great hub, Sufidreamer.Except for the one thing...one needs discipline...
I would rather read all the hubs of all the people I follow rather than work on my book..lol.
Thank you.
It is a wonderful hub.
Once again, a hub chocked full of practical and sensible ideas for those who us who want to get the that place where people consider us good writers. I have read many of your articles lately and I like your approach. This one, as well as most of the others read in the past few days are book marked for those "quiet" days when I'm not working.
Thank you for sharing this.
Great advice...thank you so much for sharing.
great advice thanks
Sorry to be one of those that got into the game just to make a bit of money, but I am totally learning so much from people like you. I am also learning from writing for some other sites that will not accept articles that are written outside of their guidelines. Thanks for all the suggestions. Aloha!
Great advice on starting a writing career, Sufidreamer, especially the part on writing every day. I wish that I was a bit more disciplined and didn't get sidetracked in the forums or reading the news online.
Write, write, write is excellent advice! I was away from HP for a while, and I got lazy with writing. The less I wrote, the harder it became when I really needed it. Since joining this challenge, I'm writing something every day, and words are coming much easier.
I have been away from writing for quite awhile and almost panicked when I initially tried to write something. It was awful, but now I keep plugging away, no matter how bad the output. Of course, I would like to see much improvement in the quality of my writing.
Great information as usual. I especially like the way you pointed out the difference between internet marketing-style writing and writing for active income. There is a difference but not everyone appreciates it!
Hi! :)
Before each write, I recommend a lot, lot, lot of reading, anything:).
To "modern poets," I would recommend Maria Laina and Antonis Fostieris, Greek poets of "middle generation". Surf, whether you agree with my recommendation?
Cheers :)!!!
Sufidreamer, great info! One that I will defitnetly bookmark and keep for reference. Thank you. :-)
Sufideamer, Thank You so much for a fantastic, informative read. I am grateful I landed here. It is truly a God send. I would be honored if you could take a couple of minutes and read 'Scented Oil' one and two. It should take 5 to 10 minutes. I know you are very busy. I understand, it is hard to get around the hubs. I do hope you make it over.
You have been a Blessing to so many at the hubs. I know the 'Father' smiles on you. Thank you for giving yourself to help others. That is what it is all about.
Hugs sufidreamer.
Sufidreamer, being relatively new to writing on line I have found this hub, by a fellow Lancastrian, to be very informative.
I have booked marked it for future reference{there's a lot to take in} Thank you for the work you have put in to help fellow hubbers.
enjoyed reading this good food for thought !
Really enjoyed your Hub Sufi, very thorough and helpful and....dare I say?.... extremely well-written too

I would like to be a writer but mu language is not the English so i can only be a bad singer.HA HA HA beware sufi the weather now and after is only for ouzo........take care
I have been practicing to be a good writer but sometimes it just turns out not so good. But this hub will definitely help me out. THanks for sharing this
This is totally amazing techniques I just been read. I will try to practice much harder and follow your advice. Thanks a lot Sufidreamer.
Love it. Great stuff, and certainly right on the money. I'm personally in the league of happy to write just to write, but I DO also understand that to have more time to engage that love, getting paid to do it would certainly free up more time to do it. :)
Wow Sufi! This is outstanding! I love reading about writing tools! I wanted to be a professional writer, and now I feel as though I am on my way!
Suridreamer, You certainly did infuse this subject with life and generate emotion. It's wonderful and I liked hearing you mention you must write everyday, It's a flow don't you think, many people say they struggle with what to write, I have came to know a place where in I write daily and after thinking about any topic for a bit most often over night I'm flooded with the ideas that form. Ah this was a delightful read and with that I feel the need to go write. You might know your writing when you fingers are numb...the pinkies anyway. Thanks and Peace :)
Great hub, I got a lot out of it. I think I see some areas here I could work on. I am mostly a creative writer so I bet I need to do more technical writing, could be very beneficial for some areas of writing I am still insecure about. This was great, I have bookmarked and will look at it again and again I am sure. If you want to criticize me.. I would love it. :) Cheers!
You know, I just hope people actually read this. That's what I hope. Practice and reading good writing are so simple and yet, so many don't. You mention poetry... you know, if people would study poetry NOT for the "message" but just the economy of words, the power of verbs and nouns, the basics on steroids... even ads would be fun to read.
Cheers.
I've been meaning to leave a comment on this hub ever since you wrote it but darn, it was in the middle of the tax season. Now it's over (wooohooo!) I can leave comments to my heart's content. I like your tips, particularly on criticisms - something that I get few and far between. I'm not bragging but I don't think my writing is that good either. I wish I can have a mentor who can give me comments, suggestions, criticisms every now and then. I'm still looking for one.
Hey Sufi, how's Greece doing? Read about the bankruptcy and now the bailout. I'm relieved about the bailout but, heck, if it happens to Greece it can happen to us right? Hope not but I hope everything's fine over there.
That's a truth. How often do you hear an actor on a great show say about his leaving, "I had to leave when it started to feel like work."
When the fun ends, that's when it's no longer a passion.
Great hub, I needed that. Just started to do articles and it is not the same as writing for yourself. Specially the research part is taking all my time way. If you could do a Hub about how to do resarch and where to find information it would be awsome!!!! LoL
Excellent!!!
Will be waiting for that hub then! ;)
Thank you for this fabulous article. I intend to take your advice to heart, my friend. Well done!
A very succinct Hubpage, packed with practical information.
Great hub, I am working to become a writer and I found your words reassuring, I know I need a lot of practice and that is what I am using Hub Pages for. Keep up the good hubs.
Thanks for a really enjoyable and useful Hub. I already do some of the things you wrote about here - like writing every day and doing lots of reading. Will keep at it.
Love and peace
Tony
Really great hub. Got lot out of it. Liked your other hubs as well. Joining your fanclub and would like to invite you to join mine. :)
Thanks for writing about such a great topic. I want to be a great writer so i have to follow these tips.
This has to be the most informative and well-written article/hub I've read yet on writing. I look forward to reading more of your hubs. Thanks!
thank u for a wonderful hub...extremely helpful n full of news for a beginner like me...
This is really great info. I suppose I have delusions of grandeur about writing. I love to write, but not sure I'm tough enough to make a career of it. Thanks for telling it like it is.
Excellent information. I enjoy writing and have just transitioned from writing for personal pleasure only to sharing my thoughts with the public. It has been a learning curve in risk-taking. Your information appeals to me because I am the most creative within structure--once I've learned the basic structure, I can create almost anything. Perhaps it assists me in developing confidence. Thank you for this useful information.
I have been so happy to have found Hub Pages. I have thought about trying to write for a while and I always lack the confidence because I know I must develop my skills further in order to write well. HP is just getting me out there and on with it which is great. I am so thankful for people here, such as yourself, who write such inspirational and just plain helpful hubs for beginners like me. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Appreciated this article as well.
A great wrting site. I tweteed your site. I wanted aspiring writers to read your excellent Hub.
