Hubpages Alternatives: The Best Writing Sites
86Google Panda Hits Content Farms
As we have seen since the infamous Google Panda raid, Hubpages, formerly one of the best writing sites, is struggling to regain its former authority and power in the search engine rankings. Most Hubbers have seen their views and income plummet, and a series of measures designed to clean up the site have seen authors suffer from a spate of unpublished hubs.
Many writers have left altogether as they move on to fresh pastures, and others have pulled underperforming Hubs, desperately trying to find new homes for their hard work. Many are setting up their own niche sites, but others want to find good Hubpages alternatives, whether for making money, building backlinks, or simply showcasing their work.
There are many article sites springing up online, but you can almost guarantee that 90% will fail. How do you find an article submission site that you know will bring results?
To help you on your way, here are a few of the best writing sites where you can upload articles and make money, publicize your own site, or simply write for sheer pleasure. Operated by long-established Hubbers, these sites are great online writing sites, with the added bonus that the site owners are open and transparent and will treat you with the respect that your skills, talent, and hard work deserve.
Inverted A Press
Inverted A Publishing
The talented author and linguist, Aya Katz, has set up an on line writing site under her ‘Inverted A’ publishing umbrella. Many of you will know Aya as a very skilled writer with the ability to shape words and use language beautifully. Her site is still developing and she doesn’t have revenue share at the moment, although I believe that she is working on it.
However, she happily embraces the creative writers and poets on HP who may feel a little battered and bruised after the recent HP witch-hunt that saw miscreants threatened with burning at the stake. Aya knows the value of good writing and she will treat your work with care and respect.

Excerptz: A New Beginning
Excerptz
This upcoming site, the work of the one and only Ryan Kett, is steadily attracting some of Hubpage’s finest writers. In his time on Hubpages, Ryan showed a near unquenchable thirst for assimilating knowledge and quickly became a success. Now, he is applying the same determination and passion into developing his own online writing site, which is growing very nicely and shrugged off the recent Google algorithm changes with contempt.
This site for writers accepts a wide range of topics and styles, and he is working on new revenue share models all the time, giving authors a much more generous percentage than Hubpages. With a stringent quality bar in place, designed to weed out spammy and automated content, Excerptz has shown great returns for both Adsense and Amazon. Ryan allows up to three outbound links, including affiliate networks, and he happily embraces the ‘Top Ten’ Amazon lists that have become unwelcome at Hubpages.

Anybody who frequents the forums knows Waynet, the eccentric but amiable ginger haired bloke who bounces from thread to thread like Tigger on acid. Beneath his earthy humor and ribald jokes, Wayne is a talented artist and consummate professional who knows how to make money online.
His site, OnePageArticles, is fairly new, but Wayne has a habit of making things happen through hard work, determination, and sheer Northern bloody mindedness. Wayne is pursuing a policy of keeping things simple so that there is less to go wrong, in a display of good Northern commonsense.

As well as being one of the nicest people on Hubpages and Squidoo, Paula is an experienced writer and marketer who has decided to put her talents to use in setting up her own site.
Paula knows how to generate revenue online and her site is well worth checking out if you are a fan of sales articles and Amazon. Try not to forget that she is very strict with content; this isn’t a site for throwing up badly written articles and hoping that nobody notices.

Xobba
For a while now, a site called Xobba has been the source of feverish rumor, a looming presence that has been slowly growing and building strength. The site is shrouded in secrecy and allegedly insists that members submit biometrics data, but there is little doubt in my mind that this writing site is going to go places.

Hello there, thank you for the info. I’ve been looking for this for while now, considering maybe I will find several of ‘missing’ Hubbers who I miss the most. Hopefully, there will be better environment in one of these Sites for me. ^^
Well written as usual with good information, but do we really need exaggerated, inflammatory statements like "recent HP witch-hunt that saw miscreants threatened with burning at the stake"?
Many of us feel HubPages' new rules are unnecessarily harsh and their notifying emails are abrupt, but let's not demonize a site to which we all owe a lot.
@Marissa: I remember had read similar lines : "recent HP witch-hunt that saw miscreants threatened with burning at the stake" at good bye message from one of my favorite’s Hubber. “There is a witch-hunt in Poem and poetry forum!” He said and then he is gone! I guess, Martyn is not the only person whose feel this way about HubPages.
Sufi, are you implying he said that, and then was unpublished for it? That's a big assumption.
Thanks for this Sufi, appreciate the list.
Thanks Sufi. I am a exploring all these sites right now. I am already on Excerptz, glad to have enrolled early.
It's good to place a couple of eggs in every basket, right?
Cheers. :)
Thank you for this excellent resource.
voted up/very useful and bookmarked
nice tune bro....
you got a 5 point tooooo me
so carry on...........
Nicely written Martyn - I like the way you always call a spade a spade mate. I hear nothing but good things about Xobba also. I wish I could say I am surprised by some of the back biting by some of the hubpages apologists but I am not. Look forward to more of your writings.
Thanks Sufi for writing this. I am very attached to Hubpages and the community, but you are right, we need to explore other pastures as well. Your list is very informative, thanks again!
Rated up! :)
Informative Hub. I have been looking for some information and this comes in handy. Thank you for sharing!
Interesting list. I only knew of two. Okay my hubpage income has dropped but I think I will try and stick out the storm a while yet. Thank you for your hub.
Well done Sufi, I have already published on a couple of these sites and can say that I am already ranking well for some of the keywords that I used - beating my hubs here in SERPS already..
Thanks Sufidreamer- i appreciate your time invested in reviewing these alternative sites, especially for us creative writers and poets.
believe i will look into "Inverted A Press"
Thanks again-
peace- greg
Hi Surfi, what's going on? What's Google Panda, and what has happened to people's income? I've earned next to nothing anyway, in 22 months, but it would be nice to know what's been changing.
Nice to see you again BTW.
Very excellent information! Many thanks! :)
It's great to know that we can support one another. And of course - there must always be more than one source of income - even if your are doing the archaic 9-5 thing.
Thanks for such a thoughtful and thought provoking hub.
I'm happy to say that I am actually earning a bit more since Google's changes, but it's because hubpages offered their own pay scheme. And getting paid at $50.00 is a good idea as well.
Rated up! And I enjoyed Ouzo last time I was in Athens!
Thanks for the hub, Sufi. It may just prove very useful!
Very nice. It's good to know of alternative sites where we can also publish our work. I didn't see your 'witch hunt' remark directed so much at HP, but more at some of those posting in the ridiculous threads that cropped up. It was very sad. But I'm always rather amused by certain human behaviors. The human race is still young in contrast to nature, we're still learning what nature is able to teach us, evolve, adapt and cooperate.
Thanks for informing the community of these sites!
voted up and useful! thanks Sifi for this refreshing hub, was just approaching 100 hubs and realized that things weren't quite right. Traffic dropped drastically and is still lagging. Will definitely look into these sites...
I think this would be useful, if only I knew what I was doing on hubpages... apart from being told I'm plagiarising my own work and earning absolutely nothing.
I'm so glad I only like to write; if I were looking for anything more I would be lost.
Thanks for all the useful, concise information Sufidreamer. I have already signed up for This is Freelance and Excerptz, so will have to see how it goes.
Your fascinating hub compels me to visit them all! Golly!
:)
It is like you read my mind and generously answered all my questions. :) Thanks so much for the info and the links!
Thank you Sufidreamer. I see hubpage writes treated as cattle. There is no represwentation here on hubpages. There is VINDICTIVENESS, political punishing, favotitism.
I will NEVER work hard for hubpages again. The tEaMHuPaGe$$$$ has no respect for many of the writers here.
Sufidreamer, thank you so much for the advice. it would be a sad day to leave HP, because I have actually "met" some really nice and particularly talented writers, but I feel that I am banging my head up against a brick wall (How's that for a tired metaphor?) with HP, and perhaps pastures new (another one) would suit me better. I'm going to take your suggestion and have a look at Inverted A.
Thanks again.
Hey Sufidreamer - Cheers! This hub is so timely. Though I may still add to my HP profile, I will definitely pursue a relationship with as many of these people as I can in the next month, especially "Waynet." Thank you for writing a hub about them. Will book mark for reference!
(shhhh - I think "am" should be "an" under the Inverted A Publishing segment of this hub)
I enjoy your way with language and appreciate the specific reviews of the sites. It's great to see background information on the people behind them.
I was away from Hubpages for over a year and a half freelancing full-time, so I'm not up on things. Playing catch-up and learning as much as I can about post-Panda success strategies. Thank you for saving me a great deal of time and making this part of today's research painless and entertaining.
I'm curious about the revenue models for these other sites. I'll check them out. I'm looking into Excerptz first, because the details you offered about the income potential there speaks to what I'm looking for.
Hi Sufidreamer, Thank you for a great Hubpage. I will check out these other sights. :)
Excellent information. Call me completely oblivious and out of every loop, but what was the great Panda raid? I have noticed I'm not getting the views I was getting before, but just put it down to my being so busy elsewhere. But it is true, something fundamental has changed here on Hubpages.
As to Marissa's comment "a site to which we all owe so much." I beg to disagree. Sure Hubpages has been fun, but without us, there would be no Hubpages. But then, I've found Marissa's tart comments on many articles that dare to criticize the site.
I'm so uninformed. Panda? Please explain or point me in the right direction... That's what I get for running off and publishing a book. Lynda
Good information but how can we belong.
Immartin, I agree with you in so many ways. I am lucky if anybody looks at anything of mine now. HubPages are arrogant in the extreme. Query an action or ask for help or advice and these are ignored. One the gets the rely "The HubPages team are busy right now; thank you for your patience". What patience? I have written to them several times because I was accused incorrectly of plagiarising my own work, and am still waiting for a reply. I was "unpublished last week end... My goodness, the HubPages team MUST be busy!
HI,
Thanks for the good info and the links, will most certainly be trying one or two of them out. Keep up the good work
Zubair? I am intrigued. Wozzat mene?
I looked it up too. I thought that being "Sufidreamer" and Zubair being one of the Companions of the Prophet (pbbh) you might have been a Muslim.
I know I am sounding neurotic, but during the last twenty minutes I once again had my hub "unpublished" and was told that I was a naughty, naughty boy.
I believe Google has destroyed Hub writers earnings potential. Of course I didn't earn anything before the Google fiasco.
Xobba likes being mentioned. Xobba happy. Xobba opens its doors to your intelligent readers. Xobba disappear now.
..... (puff of smoke)........
Huh! Learn new things everyday. Seems I missed it all. Oh well.
And Twilight Lawns -- I though you were a naughty, naughty girl! So here you are a boy... Huh.
Sufi Dreamer, please don't think I am being arrogant (although I am, in reality) but as you said that you have a passion for Islamic history and mysticism, I thought you might like to read this hub:
This is very helpful. I am familiar with all of the personae, having read them in the fora, and have often appreciated your restrained, sage comments. I had seen reference to about half the sites or had encountered them by following rabbit trails. Your evaluation is immensely beneficial. E.g. I had explored several of Paula's sites yesterday and decided that she was obviou$ly pro$pering, but either alone or in thin company on those sites. Your endorsement erases any concerns. I'm off to diversify my...uh...investment in hubs.
Duuuuuuude! Every once in a while I drop by, in stealth mode, like some Navy Seal on a bin Laden compound to see what old friends have been up to... and I really like what I saw on this one. I haven't followed the general activity on hubs since I left, but as you may remember, my final rebellion was based on the direction of hubpages as it accepted, and the site even encouraged- fake writers that obviously used copied content to boost article output. The site allowed the infamous portfolios of indian chicks that entered the site, yet anyone that was humorously controversial like my alter ego raiderfan or Pest, got banned the moment a new hub popped up. There was no foul language, it was just old themes that were nothing worse than anyone saw on Benny Hill. Though I appreciated an occasional glimpse of half naked women, hubpages was in pursuit of a numbers thing, driving away the other hubbers who took their time to create extremely researched and thought out hubs. I didn't put myself in that category of hubber but I respected their abilities to both entertain and inform. I don't know who's "who" on the site anymore and most of the time when I look, I want to laugh at how lame the hubs are, there's not really an entertaining mix like there once was. I believe if hubpages kept a balance of respect for both creative and article writers, the two would influence each other as it did when I was first here. It's good to see other hubbers making the moves to create sites that can appreciate and combine the different aspects of writing. No ouzo for me my friend, I tried some a while back and I received a split head. I'm still a tequila man. Really good job on this, and I have no issues with telling Marisa to quit with the hubpage cheerleader act. She acts like some fanatic churchgirl who fell in love with Preacher Deeds. Naughty, naughty...
I'm extremely appreciative of this hub I thought I was just paranoid and the only one being burnt at the stake. I've spent the last four weeks deleting or reviving my old posts. Mostly deleting I don't have the patience or time to revise because some demigod has a little authority hangup. Joining this site has been the best thing that's happened in my life, but I take exception of being muzzled due to some of my subject matter. Thank you so much for sharing this vital data and it's been voted up, marked useful, awesome and bookmarked.
I am mainly shot down for my photos being pixeled. Now I don't mind criticism int he least but most of these pictures were up for wekks and months and the hub had a lot of response. The other thing I am buzzled is that they stopped the news capsul. At the beginning I was told they bring in a lot traffic which I agree with but now they are cancelled? I signed and had a few article up in one of the other sites. I also found Seekyt very good. As you said we shouldn't rely on one site alone. I am really unhappy about these pictures which I had to put down to quarter. They din't look impressive anymore. As one of the writer said, I also spent a lot of time and made great effort for my site to look impressive. A quarter picture does not give the reader a full picture to add to the hub and give you a better knowledge what you are writing about. Let's face it Google never overpaid the writer in the first place.
I have to tell you I never heard of most of these sites before. I definetely learned a lot from reading your hub. Thanks so much for sharing!
What does it mean: "keeping online portfolio pieces"
I understand each word, of course, but I suspect the meaning of the sum is greater than the sum of the parts.
Hmm Now Im in a state of wondering... after reading some of (no time for all of them) the posts on here...
I was edged out at Ehow a year or so ago but had articles still making money... then they offered to buy out my articles for a really bad song and dance... (of course they have already made Ersatz articles...)
I come over here and think to just re-edit them and drop them into the system and maybe have to wait a few months for the search engines to pick them up again...
But now see that this place is on a shaky foundation too... and Like the rest of you.. I keep getting told my articles are duplicates...
Thanks for the links above... I will probably contact a few of them and see which of them are actually serious about some proven How to articles... and maybe... even get paid for my work.. (would be nice wouldn't it)
Something wrong some where....I had a hub - top 5 strongest men on earth' with lot of visitors. But once I got a message that pictures need to be revised. I remove all the pictures and published the hub. But now got the message that the hub is substandard - the same which is hanging here for more than one year now seems to be sub standard...how is it?
Hi another fantastic hub designed to help others in your usual unselfish way well done my friend
Hi there! I am new here at Hubpages, and published one of my own poems, and was told that it was unpublished because it basically was a duplicate or very similar to another. I have no others like it on here, and couldn't figure out why they did this? Ugh...well, hopefully I can figure it out, or just keep at it...Thanks for this article! :)
http://www.voicesnet.com is not bad either.
Marisa's comment-
"Many of us feel HubPages' new rules are unnecessarily harsh and their notifying emails are abrupt, but let's not demonize a site to which we all owe a lot."
I take great offense at that comment, "to which we all owe a lot". It is hubpages that owes a lot to all the great writers that made it what it was. For the most part, they've disappeared because they were sold on "they would earn an income and have fun doing it" and then the reality check came in the form of pennies. Hubpages did nothing but sit back and watch everyone work. No writer should feel indebted to this site in any way. If this is to be strictly business, so be it, keep the acts of gratitude and show the money.
The Panda update has really hit me bad! Maybe not all my writing is that great, but it is also not rubbish, so I'll check out these sites.
Good information and thanks for the ideas of new places to check out. I haven’t heard of any of them before reading this, the Panda changes should shake up the world of online writing!
Thank you, at least we are all in this together. I appreciate the tips, we all need them. Thanks and hope you are well.
This is very useful info because self publishing a book and trying to market it online are a daunting tasks. I'm always looking for ways to increase traffic to my blogs, and I'm going to give each one of these sites a try. Thanks.
@Sufid, good post and good alternatives to HubPages but they're not the best alternatives for sure. One should also consider going with well established and proven structures. In as much as the panda happened to have taught us a lot of lessons, I'm rather building and establishing my own niche sites and blogs with my writings, optimizing and monetizing them as well which are also yeilding expected results. The word "diversify" is the key!
This panda is globally affecting all content farms including the good, the bad, and the ugly in the field. HubPages will definitely bounce back better than before, though the are not my only writing and publishing options.
I am just beginning. I discovered Hubpages accidently as I followed a link. I have a ten year plan to replace my current income by writing. I planned to rotate through five different writing sites with one new article each week. That would give me ten good articles per site per year. Is it better to spread my articles across five sites or perhaps choose only two or three?
Mister Veritis brought up a good point. I was thinking about doing something similar and spreading out my content. Is this a good or bad idea?
Sufidreamer this is great article on Hubpages alternative, and as people move to these writing platform we need to remember that things are not static and keep on changing hence as writers we also need to keep evaluating our progress along the way and see how we can improve and become relevant if any change could crop up immediately without any notice. Putting one's eggs in one basket should be avoided as what has happened to many people who were writing here on Hubpages a lone, we need to diversify and these other revenue sharing sites just give as that opportunity to do.
Perhaps these Panda changes could just be an opportunity to get started in the right direction, it's given writer the opportunity to evaluate themselves on how best they can approach this writing business online. Then there is http://smartguava.com which is also coming up and it's look great with quality materials and at the moment it's by an invitation, let's people check for any opportunity with other writing platforms to diversify.
This is all very useful information to a newcomer like myself. I can imagine that if times are this difficult on hubpages now, that it might be worth getting involved in other sites too. I just need more hours in a day now!
Thanks for sharing these sites! My hands are full with Squidoo and Hubpages at the moment. Dunno how you guys get the time to test out all these alternatives! Will check into them soon. Thanks again for sharing!
Hubpages or alternative sites, everybody wants adsense to give you something. If you are not approved by adsense I think you won't be gaining anything.
Not only did the Google Panda decrease earnings, but I am a resident of Illinois. So at about the same time Panda hit, Amazon de-activated all Illinois affiliates because otherwise our state government was going to consider Illinois "stores" and subject Amazon to Illinois sales taxes. Thus, I'm down both traffic and affiliate sales. I like the sites you posted because of the allowed links to any affiliates you want. Thanks for the info!
Thank you so much for this helpful hub. I guess it's not smart to put all your eggs in one basket anyway.
FINALLY not another hub about 'how to make money on hubpages'. Thank you!
Thank you for this hub- refreshing ot know talent and creativity still thrive outside and there are newer sites by talented and sincere creators. much appreciated. voted up!
Thank you for the resources!
It does seem that the tone of the site has changed along with the traffic. I miss the old HP and the writers who have bailed. Thanks for the pointers here on options. I'll bookmark your hub for future use.
Wow! You've hit on a hot topic with this one! I will check out all of those sites. Thanks for posting this. I was in need of some direction and happened to stumble upon this at the right time. Voting up!
WOW! I have been so single-purpose focused on getting our new catalog finished that I've neglected my Hubs and visits. I see that I am very tardy in discovering this Hub.
Well done, and thanks for the info. Bookmarked, voted up & useful!
Thank you, brother, for providing this useful information. I appreciate it!
Great hub, very helpful indeed.
I don't think I am quite ready for changing environments, just because I have actually been quite absent from the writing scene - at least from hubpages. I will have to come back and keep on developing my presence here, as it is quite silent now.
I will, however, keep this list in mind. Once my presence as a writer is more mature and ready, I will most likely try this list out and see what it has to give.
Once again, very useful with great information. Voted up and bookmarked for future reference!
thanks!
A good farmer plants more than one seed
I'm so glad I found your Hub! Although I'm relatively new to HP, it's good to know of other venues for my writing, regardless of my reasons for writing...thanks!
A great and useful hub which I am bookmarking.
Thanks for sharing and take care.
Eiddwen.
Hello Sufidreamer,
It looks like I've been missing some interesting happenings here.
I have not been very active in HP lately so I was only vaguely aware of what has been happening. I know that Dave (D.A.L.) has pulled out some hubs and set up his own website. However, that's about all I know. So it's good that I chanced upon your very useful hub during my visit today. I really learned a lot here as well as from all the comments.
Thanks very much for sharing this. I'll check out those sites you mentioned.
Rated up and useful!
All the best!
Very helpful, thanks. I will be looking into these for sure.
Voted up, useful, and interesting.
To aspire as writers we must begin the process of self promotion but protect the humbleness of our work by not allowing the ego to interrupt. I find this difficult as I want people to enjoy my work as that is what I write for.
I find that same essence in this hub Martyn and I appreciate the efforts you have gone to by illustrating what you consider to be the best. I am happy for you to drop by sometime and if you feel inclined to offer any suggestions it will be greatly appreciated.
Great information. Thank you, I will check these sites out.
This is very useful article in making money online. Thanks for giving the sites.
Lots of great information here. Thanks for sharing.
I have been away from hubpages for a while and it seemed I missed a lot. I wasn't making any money on hubpages as this not my primary goal. Now that I have more time on my hands I can make it my secondary goal and your article will prove very useful. Thanks so much. Am off to check them all out!
My second home for writing is Seekyt, also a site built by a HubPages member (howtoguru). He did a great job with his website, he's very helpful and ethical in his SEO efforts :) I love the site!
Very useful information
Excellent information here Martyn! Nice to know there are other websites now being offered by other folks. Cheers!
Hey cheers for the honourable mention of onepagearticles mate! Been working hard on other stuff, but do need to redesign onepagearticles at some point and just let it run itself....just keep getting spammy authors trying to sign up. Lucky it's not a simple sign up and go site or else I'd have more work on with it....

Hey Martyn, excellently written. It is almost identical to Ryan's hub. And, I am being serious. As usual, great writing and very helpful to those who read your writing. Thank you for sharing. Yet, another hub I've bookmarked and voted up! :) Much appreciation. :)
