Log Home Kits For Sale – Live the Log Cabin Dream

By Sufidreamer

Log home kits are growing in popularity as a relatively cheap, easy, and environmentally friendly way to own a beautiful home. To most people, log cabins are rustic, roughly built dwellings more suited to living the wilderness dream in the mountains.

In fact, the modern log home bears little resemblance to the rough-hewn cabins of the frontier age, and a multi-million dollar industry has sprung up around these elegant, character-filled dwellings.

Finding log home kits for sale involves finding a company who will supply and help to erect your new cabin, although many enthusiasts opt for self-build log cabins. From an expensive modern log home with all of the mod cons, to a weekend cabin in the woods, log homes are becoming an increasingly popular choice.

Log Homes as a Primary Residence

For many years, log cabins were a popular choice for families wanting a second home as a beautiful retreat away from the hustle of daily life, close to nature. For fishing and hunting trips, the humble cabin has always been a wonderful place to spend a relaxing weekend.

As the environmental movement has entered the public awareness and house prices rise, many have realized the potential of log homes for sale as a beautiful and enduring primary residence. These abodes have moved from the fringes into the mainstream of home ownership, traversing the full budget range, from small, cosy cabins to professionally designed, sprawling mansions.

The Sophistication of Log Home Kit Design

A search in your local area or online reveals a huge number of specialist log homebuilders and suppliers, offering a range of options. Whether you want to use a ‘green architect’ and specialist contractor, or you want to opt for a self-build cabin, you will be able to find the perfect home at a competitive price.

Modern log home kits are designed with the aid of powerful CAD software, and every individual component is prefabricated, carefully numbered, meticulously cut to shape, and pre-drilled. This ensures that the pieces will fit together perfectly onsite, making the job of the contractor much easier.

The designers even account for the natural flexing and shrinking of the wood, as well of the settling of the new home onto its foundations, ensuring that the home will be durable and will not develop gaps between the components.

Older log cabins often suffered from insect infestations and from rotting, but modern wood sealing technology uses pressure treating to impregnate the wood with preservative. Improved caulking helps to keep out adverse weather and prevents heat from escaping, ensuring that modern log homes are well insulated and warm, helping to reduce the carbon footprint.

These dwellings are long lasting and durable as any other wooden home and will last for decades without complaint.

Ultimately, log cabins and homes are renowned for their energy efficiency and superior thermal qualities so, if the timber is sourced from sustainable forests, they are an excellent green option.

Self-Build Log Home Kits

In terms of price, some of the luxury log homes rival standard timber framed homes in price, especially when you take the cost of erecting the building into account, leveling the ground and installing strong foundations.

However, if you want to build a log cabin on a budget, you can always go for the self-build option. Unlike standard buildings, the pre-fabricated nature of these homes means that they do not require much specialist knowledge, requiring only hard work and the ability to follow a plan. Certainly, for a competent DIY enthusiast, this is a very realistic option.

Selecting the right log home can be difficult given the huge range of available options, so a little careful research and due diligence is essential. By all means, look at the brochures and online catalogs of suppliers, even visiting their showrooms, but don’t forget word of mouth. Many log home enthusiast and suppliers organize regular seminars all around the world, so don’t be afraid to visit a few and talk to experienced self-builders.

Log Home Kits for Sale and Finance

Even financing is becoming much easier, because many mortgage providers offer specialist loans to self-builders, gradually releasing finance as the home takes shape. For many people, especially in a turbulent economy and uncertain housing market, looking at log home kits for sale may be their best opportunity to set a foot on the property ladder.

Thanks for the kind comment, John - I like them, too, but they are not practical in our part of the world due to the risk of forest fires :(

Thanks, Hello, hello - I love the feel of wood, and it does make a house seem more alive

Thanks, LeanMan - a few people in the Northern Peloponnese have them, high up in the mountains. They do look fantastic :)

Hey Sufi, I've always wanted to buy 10 acres of land in remote location, build a Log Home or Log Cabin, right in the middle. And, have roads carved through the land, so when you look at it from the sky, it would look like a tic-tac-toe game board with my house in the center square. LOL! I personally think it would be cool. :)

Hi Cagsil - that is sheer insanity at its finest. I like that :)

Cheers, Granny's House - they are pretty common further north, but we are in wildfire country here, so nobody builds them. That is a shame because they are very beautiful :)

I've always wanted a log home. I love that beautiful rustic "A" chalet style. We came close to considering a log home kit when we began looking to buy a home last February. Since it took us four months just to paint, lay hardwood flooring, and finally unpack in the house we purchased back in June, I think buying an existing home was very likely the better choice for us.

I believe you did mention that putting a log home kit together requires hard work. :)

Hi Staci-Barbo7 - They certainly are a beautiful way to build a home. A log home is a lot of work, if you decide to do it yourself, so many people prefer to leave it to the experts. Of course, that pushes up the cost considerably!

Great hub. I love log cabins. I've been "collecting" a bunch of them on Pinterest, in the hopes of having one some day!
